Weather in June
First of all, it was so humid. I visited in the end of June, summer time in Hanoi with rainy season. Directly came from Malaysia which is also a hot place, but I couldn't tolerate humidity.
Overview
Pros
Great place to touch locals life in Vietnam. Great place to work as people seem to be hard workers. Food doesnt rely on spices or salt, and none of the meals use too much oil. A lot of fresh vegetables in every meal. So I believe Vietnamese meals are not only tasty, but also healthy. Those meals reminded me of Japanese dishes I eat in my hometown including my mom's home cooked food.
Cons
Unfortunately, not many can speak English. Even some Grab drivers (1 out of 3) spoke no English. Not so great in terms of the air pollution.
Day 1
Old Town Coffee
Arrived Hanoi at 1pm, I first went to try "egg coffee" from the Old Town Cofee. It was a bit hard to difficult to find, you have to go into the narrow path between stores. But you can simply ask a lady at the money exchange for the direction. She spoke English. Since I read good reviews from Trip Advisor, I certainly expected something great! It turned out, I had a funny interesting experience, while the drink was okay.
First, I had to climb up the stairs to the third floor. Then I was directed the room with no airconditioning. You can tolerate as long as you are sitting in front of the fan.
Next, drinks. Somewhat tasted like an eggnog, the thick layer of the egg milk foam, it's better when you mix well.
Unfortunately they didn't have food despite that food was on the menu. But I enjoyed the overall experience :)
Ngoc Son Temple/ Thap Rua
This temple is in the middle of the lake. You can enjoy this temple because of its unique location as well as the architectures. Locals were praying when I visited.
From this place, you can see another building on the lake. This one, I later discovered is called Thap Rua.
St. Joseph Cathedral
A beautiful church, built during the French colonization. Looked like it was burned. But inside, nice stendgrass.
Toong Coworking space
Fruits Cup at To Tich
I am such a fooddie! It was soooo tasty. Fresh fruits and sorbet like ice cream on top. Yet it was only $1.5.
Night Market
It looks real. They even sell brand goods like Nike, Adidas, and other sport brands. And it gets as cheap as $5. I purchased Nike shirt for a souvenir at $8. The store owner originally presented at $10 which was already cheap enough if it is true Nike shirt. I was only able to bargain down to $8, but oh well, it was fun talking. And for myself, I purchase a straw hat at $3 (I am not sure if it was discounted or not). It is fun to bargain and chit chat with store owners, but you may be tricked :) The original suggest of the straw hat was $5, and I first requested $2.5 and concluded the deal at $3.
Day2
Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre
Too famous to describe. I am sure its a must go place if you visit Hanoi for the first time. Pupptes dancing on the water with Vietnamese traditional music and singing.
Jacksons Steak House
Expensive. But great cost performance considering the high quality beef. (EX. If you eat this quality steak at Wolf Gang, it cost over $100, while here you get it at $50). Even still, I am sure it is too expensive for local Vietnamese. At the same time, this duck salad was the best duck salad I have ever had ($10).
Opera House
Beautiful. Reminds me of the original opera house in Paris.
Hanoi Station
Bigger than I expected. But doesnt seem so convenient (perhaps for the long distance?)
Spa (Vietnamese massage)
To my preference, I like Shiatsu, Thai massage, and Balinese massage better. Vietnamese massage seems to be too quick in motion. And I do not really like patting. At the same time, the lady was good. I love the blind massage in KL, and she reminded me of that, hitting the right tissue.
Day3
Ho Chin Min Memorial
One Pillar Pagoda
Pho
Food you must eat before you leave Vietnam, right? :)
