Japan's Tax Free system, I believe, is toooooo convenient to resist purchasing goods.
Whenever you think about "Tax Free", you imagine the "Long Queue" "Airport Special", isnt it?
That is so wrong in the case of Japanese Tax Free shopping opportunities. Certain stores, in fact, 20,000 stores are sl called Tax Free. You can purchase any goods and tax is automatically deducted simply by showing your passport.
Not only that, they are not souvenir stores where they sell expensively priced souvenirs at no tax. They are stores where Japanese locals love. In that sense, You foreigners are in such a great position by naturally having 8% off of those "cheap stores"!
Why do you spend so much money on the product you could actually purchase half the price? To avoid those regrets, let me tell you TOP 5 stores that provide tax free shopping!
No5: Mitsukoshi
Well, mitsukoshi is a high end store. Sure, but tax free shopping is allowed. So high quality, high brand shopping can be done without paying tax (automatically deducting 8% off). Mitsukoshi provides a quick and simple step, and efficient service never makes you wait long. You can show your passport at the tourist counter in B1 and you get a pass to deduct tax :)
I would say, if you are visiting Tsukiji or Ginza, go for it :)
No4: Electricities in Akihabara
I am just saying, almost every electricity stores in Akihabara is tax free. Including Big Camera, Yodobashi, and smaller stores.
Here is the list. So not just a common stuff, but if you are purchasing electricity, I recommend you go to Akihabara and look for it!
No3: Daikoku Drug Store
Daikoku is one of the famous drug stores that sells products at cheaper price.
What can you purchase at cheap price?
1) Cosmetics
2) Snacks
3) Food, Beverages
Tips: Cheapest ones are in front of the stores. Those are typically the most competitively priced goods the store could sell.
No2: Don Quixote
Don Quixote is Japan's one of the biggest discount stores located in many places. The most famous one among foreigners is perhaps the one in Shinjuku.
Although almost everything is competitively priced, the reason it still comes in the second place is, other than Shinjuku one, not many Don Quixote is in a good locations (compared to the No 1).
If you only want to purchase the cheap ones to make you feel good, then again, all goods in front of the stores are great. Or somewhere you can easily recognize typically have goods that are so cheap in that they are actually causing trouble for Don Quixote. That means, those are the cheapest products you could possibly purchase not only at Don Quixote, but anywhere in Japan.
*Just be careful that not everything is cheaper than the rest of the stores. Cosmetics, though it is definitely more competitive than regular stores, drug stores could be cheaper (like Daikokuya above).
No1: Matsumoto Kiyoshi
I put Matsukiyo as No1 option because of the number of stores. Literary you can see Matsukiyo right by the every station in Tokyo. And its store color is yellow, very catchy, so easy to locate. So it is not only cheap, but it is convenient. Therefore I categorized it as No 1 choice.
Also, the reason I love Matsukiyo is the discount coupon from the App. At least, you get 10% off of the purchase, if you have the App :)
I think its worth downloading the app at least while you are in Japan. Then, you can enjoy purchasing anything off 10% ;) (food and beverage, 5% off)
